AFTER TWO YEARS OF PLANNING, FISHERMEN CAN NOW SELL THEIR FISH DIRECTLY TO CONSUMERS WITH THE OPENING OF A PUBLIC FISH SALES FLOAT IN FALSE CREEK.

Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Councillor Sam Sullivan, the Honorable Hedy Fry and MLA Tim Stevenson cut the ribbon to open the Public Fish Sales Float.

At the grand opening on January 30,1999 the Honorable Dr. Hedy Fry, MP Vancouver Centre on behalf of Federal Fisheries Minister David Anderson, Tim Stevenson, MLA Vancouver Burrard representing BC Fisheries Minister Dennis Streifel, and Councilor Sam Sullivan of the City of Vancouver participated at the ribbon-cutting.

The three-way funding partnership will see the federal and provincial governments along with the False Creek Harbour Authority each contributing $50,000 to the venture which will help maintain the vibrancy and attraction of False Creek.

Fishermen will have the advantage of a higher return for their catch and consumers benefit from having no wholesale markup. The consumer and the vessel owner and crew will also benefit from the direct contact.

The president of the False Creek Harbour Authority, Lynn Prestash said, “The Public Fish Sales Float is an excellent example of governments working together to help fishermen and the larger community.” Lynn welcomed the community’s interest in the new facility and thanked Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch, Fisheries Renewal BC and the City of Vancouver as well as the Authority’s False Creek neighbours for their support.

The False Creek Harbour Authority is a community-based, not-for-profit corporation that provides long-term, affordable, safe and secure moorage and services for commercial fishing vessels and transient craft in an environmentally responsible manner. For details on how you can benefit from this new facility please contact the Harbour Office.
