Policy and Procedures at False Creek Harbour: False Creek Harbour Authority trying to keep “Business as Usual”.

THE DIRECTORS AND STAFF OF THE FALSE CREEK HARBOUR AUTHORITY ARE WORKING TO MAINTAIN FALSE CREEK HARBOUR AS A COMMERCIAL FISHING HARBOUR IN THE FACE OF INDUSTRY RESTRUCTING AND LEGISLATIVE CHANGES.

False Creek Harbour enjoys a solid history of providing facilities for fishers in Vancouver. Changes in industry, legislation and management pose a challenge to maintaining a commercial fishing presence here in False Creek.

The restructuring in the Commercial Fishing Industry over the last few years has affected harbour operations. No longer do vessels fish all summer and return to winter in harbour. The reduction in salmon openings have kept boats in harbour longer and expanded the number of vessels fishing other species.

Increasing environmental awareness has meant that environmental legislation and enforcement are having a significant impact on harbour operations and expenditures. As a harbour authority, False Creek has assumed may functions that were once handled by DFO. Budgeting, accounts payable, and collection must now be done here at the harbour.

The False Creek Harbour Authority is developing policies and procedures to meet these challenges and still provide the expected level of service
